Dexterous Leaps, Spins, and Flips leave Impression on Chinese Culture Theatrical Connoisseurs
Welcome to the Sound Of Hope Radio network, This is Catherine Hennessy and in this program we will be covering the Divine Performing Arts in Chicago’s Civic Opera House on December the 27th frist matinee at 2PM.
The Divine Performing Arts have, as of the 29th, completed tours in Chicago, San Diego, Jacksonville and Durham. Attending the Chicago first matinee performance were Natalia Hart and Michael Jernkin. Natalia is a statistician. Michael works at Northwestern University in chicagoland. Natalia expressed how thrilled she is about the show. Michael was never exposed to Eastern culture hence the DPA show gave him a very good insight and a very good reason to learn more of Eastern culture and its influence on America. A good example is the Japanese Mynoya flower he saw on the backdrop is everywhere in Mississippi.
Natalia and Michael both were delighted to share their thoughts and experiences with SOH reporter.
We’ll now listen to their feelings and insights about the show.
The Monkey King Triumphs, one of Divine Performing Arts productions, mesmerised audience with most beloved character ‘Monkey King’, spring to life in this adaptation of a scene from the 16th century novel, Journey To The West. The protagonist, a Buddhist Monk, is traveling to India in search of scriptures, joined by an ogre, a pig, and a miraculous monkey met en route. When a mountain detour leaves the monk alone and unguarded. He is set upon by a demon that assumes the guise of a temptress. Will Monkey manage to save the day? The storyline reflects the melding of the magical, moral and mundane so common in the traditional Chinese novel.
During the fights between the Monkey and the demon, the theatrical classical Chinese dance displayed array sills of jumps, turns and flips, as well as extremely demandidng aerial techniques such as high-flying dives, dexterous leaps, and diverse spins.
The Monkey King Triumps’ dance projects the monkey’s image, prowess, and wisdom. It leaves powerful impression on Chinese culture theatrical connoisseurs.
The Divine Performing Arts troupe is currently scheduled to tour in Los Angeles’ Pasadena Civic Auditorium from the 30th – 4th January; Detroit’s Ford Community & Performing Arts Center from the 30th – 31st; and New York City’s Brooklyn in the Howard Gilman Opera House from the 3rd – 4th January.
