The ancient Chinese people had a very unique sense of style. Though-out the changing eras, there was always new laws for all items of clothing and this depended on which dynasty, year and time of year they were in. These ancient people’s view of the world and their way of thinking was always expressed in their dress.
As an important part of ancient Chinese culture, clothing also embodied the harmonious relationship between people and nature. The people believed that humankind is an integral part of nature, based on their faith in the heavens and their adherence to high honourable standards.
While Europe was experiencing the Dark Ages, the Chinese civilization was flourishing with Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism reigning as their guiding belief systems. Chinese people believed that because of kindness and gracious principles, the heavens bestowed on them wisdom and a magnificence culture.
Since its inception in 2006, there has been much highly saluted focus on the Divine Performing Arts throughout the globe. One specific spotlight within the show is in regards to the meticulous replication of the design and colours of the China’s ancient era costumes.
Within every act of the DPA performances, each performer’s amazing portrayals of specific aspects of China’s ancient culture and history, is enhanced by their stunning costumes.
Modern design has a theory for every detail, including colour, balancing and dynamics, whereas ancient China’s people did not have such theories. Beauty and virtue were the general principles of their designs.
The DPA costume designers follow the principle: to create costumes that both signify China’s history and that are respectful of its ancient culture; instead of creating costumes just to stimulate the senses. Consequently, all of their costumes, including the hairstyles to the hats, are designed based on authentic historical data throughout the entire artistic process. Hence, the designers, ingeniously portraying as accurately as possible, a pageantry of stunning colour and meticulous design to world-wide audiences, within every performance of the Divine Performing Arts.
A question of reflection for us all to ponder is without doubt …Why has today’s society and culture, including fashion, changed so much from that in ancient times?
Upcoming performances of Divine Performing Arts will be in Seoul, South Korea Feb 4th – 8th, with St. Louis’s, MO, final show Feb7th, Memphis, TN Feb 8th, and Little Rock, AR, Feb 9th.
Seize this wonderful opportunity to experience a truly remarkable and beautiful show, soon coming to a city near you. You will be inspired.
