Before crossing to our interview from this premiere evening performance, let’s take a quick look at the city of Adelaide.
The South Australian coastal capital is located north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains between Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide is also situated close to the River Torrens.
As the fifth-largest city in Australia, Adelaide has a population of approximately 1.3 million, making it the most populated city in South Australia. Adelaide was founded in 1836 and named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the German-born consort of King William IV. Prior to British settlement, the Adelaide area was inhabited by the Kaurna (pronounced “Garner” or “Gowna”) Aboriginal nation.
Early Adelaide was shaped on foundations of spiritual freedom , a commitment to civil liberties and advancement in political education, by its early forefathers, which led to world-first reforms.
The economy in Adelaide is primarily based on manufacturing, defence technology and research, commodity export and corresponding service industries.
Today, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food, wine and culture, and of course its long and magnificent beachfronts.
According to The Economist’s World’s most liveable cities’ index, Adelaide continues to rank in the Top 10, as one of the world’s most liveable cities.
